It&#8217;s like an <strong>emergency button pressed hard<\/strong>\u2014that fight\/flight response makes everything feel urgent and threatening. Suddenly, the part of our brain that helps us <strong>think creatively<\/strong> and <strong>see different perspectives<\/strong> (the prefrontal cortex) shuts down as if saying &#8220;<em>this is not the time to be creative! We&#8217;ve got to put out the fire!<\/em>&#8220;.<br><br>In this episode, <strong>Brianna<\/strong> is awoken at night to her roommate <strong>Vicky yelling on the phone<\/strong>, turning on lights at all hours, and bringing friends into their confrontations. Her thinking narrowed to &#8220;<em>I either endure this or quit school entirely<\/em>.&#8221; That&#8217;s not her being dramatic\u2014that&#8217;s what stress does to all of us. Our mind fixates on all the things that are wrong, and we start seeing everything through that <strong>stressed-out lens<\/strong>. We <strong>catastrophize<\/strong> (&#8220;<em>This will never get better<\/em>&#8220;), think in <strong>black-and-white terms<\/strong> (&#8220;<em>It&#8217;s perfect or it&#8217;s terrible<\/em>&#8220;), and assume we know what others are thinking (&#8220;<em>They&#8217;ll never let me change rooms<\/em>&#8220;).<br><br><strong>Brianna&#8217;s fear of requesting a room change<\/strong> is such a relatable example. Her thoughts only went to all the <strong>social consequences<\/strong> and <strong>contract issues<\/strong> that might not even exist, but in her stressed state, they felt completely real. It\u2019s actually something much more subtle\u2014something that <em>involves both mind and body<\/em>.<br><br>Solution-centered thinking becomes possible when our nervous system calms down enough\u2014when both mind and body can relax and breathe easily, our mind regains the capacity to view situations from different perspectives, gain insights, and finally start seeing options again.<br><br>When Brianna worked with her hypnotherapist Luke, she didn\u2019t suddenly become optimistic.
